(in progress)

With a new game about to be published, Blink Industries gave us an opportunity to make some promotional material for them in the form of a looping 2 second animation. Specifically, they wanted the Blink Industries logo animated in the style of their game, Nippets, which is all about finding hidden objects and small stories. I was pretty excited to work on this as the final product they had in mind was quite clear and structured while also giving us enough space to get creative. I decided to work together with Amy, we had some ideas for winter and spring but in the end we chose winter as we had more ideas.

Before thinking of ideas, we all went to play the demo together and really enjoyed the game and tried to think of what in it we could add.

Our initial ideas were:

  • A snow fight
  • Skiing
  • A person looking for a lost object in the snow
  • Sledder running from a polar bear
  • Making certain elements into a tree
  • Cat playing in the snow
  • Logo freezing and melting
  • Shaking snow
  • Someone licking the pole

First animatics:

We combined several elements that we liked and added more. But looking at the the “Blink” section of the logo, it seemed like there was no feasible way to incorporate the freezing and melting in a way that we could animate it in a style that is the same as Nippets so we changed it into a shining ice.

For the logo part, we took a lot of inspiration from the in game logo of Nippets. While it replicates both the Blink logo and the Nippets logo, in retrospect the logo didn’t match the atmosphere of the game which is about finding different features and moving your eyes across the image. Nicky liked our animation and gave us good feedback on the timing of our animations.

Before the mid-point review with Nicola I made an animatic/ rough animation of the animation in TVPaint. Though he liked what we had, he wanted more details in our animation, especially animals. Looking at other groups logo designs, a lot of groups used elements of the environment in the letters so we took inspiration from that and made a logo that fits more into the theme.

The new logo used elements we could find from the winter environment including trees, buildings, fences, etc. Nippets used a lot of colours multiple times throughout the game so we took this idea and used it. I’m much happier with this version of the logo than the previous one. Both logos drawn by Amy.
