Playgrounds In Motion

The first talk I went to was for the studio Golden Wolf who make creative advertisements for commissioning companies. They also introduced two sub branches of their company, one focused on music production while the other created original IP.
It was actually the talk about their music production that piqued my interest, as it was the complete antithesis of a conversation I had an hour before. They discussed how they wanted to create more algorithmically aligned music whereas my previous conversation was about how much they hated that. I liked Golden Wolf’s creative direction, I think it’s certainly a place I would be aiming for in the future.
The Line was another studio I was quite excited to see, especially as a 2D animator, they have a style and process I admire a lot. When they showed an amazing animatic that got rejected by Marvel it put the nature of idea development into perspective for me.
After The Line’s talk, we attended a draw along with one of the directors there, JuanPe! He showed us his process for animating his character Peck. He answered some questions for us and even hung around to speak with us afterwards

While our classmates were talking to JuanPe, some of us bumped into our senior alumni from New Earth! It was very nice bumping into people who had done the journey we were currently on, and to have a peak into what the future could hold for us.
At the end of the day we went to the Kpop Demon Hunters Sing Along/ Directors q&a, which was just overall really fun even if it was just for fun.
Across the day we bumped into multiple alumni and met a lot of people across the industry. It wasn’t as stressful as I first thought it would be and reminded me that overall everyone just wants to help each other up.

Playgrounds In Motion gave good insight into how varied the animation industry is. For example, Cartoon Saloon created a beautiful short film based on Irish folklore while Nexus Studio was focusing on immersive experiences and bringing animation outside of the confines of the screen. Additionally, seeing all the effort and years of work that was put into the film Kpop Demon Hunters was really exciting, especially seeing the attention to detail on the cultural elements. I could tell that the directors really put a lot of thought and love into the project and I hope that one day I can be in a similar position.
For my first time at a networking event, I really enjoyed it and I think I did pretty well to step outside of my comfort zone and speak to new people. It helped demystify the industry a little bit as it was nice to know that everyone still remembered what it was like to be a student getting into industry for the first time.
