Industral Light & Magic is an animation studios under LucasFilms that specialises in VFX and 3D animation. They have worked on a lot of popular titles such as Rango, Abba Voyage and Wicked. I had known some animators who used to work for ILM Singapore before the studio was shut down, but I didn’t actually know that they had a studio here in London.

Finding out that a few of the animators working there were LCC graduates was really encouraging! However, due to ILM’s breadth of work it was quite clear that they were a very 3D based studio which isn’t the skills that our course develops but is something to keep in mind when doing practice outside of university. (Though some animators had come from 2D practice). However, I would be interested in areas such as visual development, concept art and storyboarding if the opportunity does arise.

Some of the jobs they showed us were environment generalists, 3d generalists, riggers and more. The way they worked by giving out shots and letting juniors do real work was very cool as that’s what I would love from working with a studio.
